The Chevy
--
My first car was a 1965
Chevy Biscayne
it wasn’t a car to show
my neighbor Frank
he drove a white 1964
Ford Mustang which was like
owning the clouds, the sun,
the blue sky, the constellations
too.
Yet, I drove this Chevy
to work twenty miles
each way past tall oaks
roots a million feet
from the sky
reliable on the road
like the more expensive
Impala the salesman
wanted so badly
for me to buy
I drive the Chevy
over a railroad track
and she says,
“You’ve been awful to me
and now you go over
those rails thinking
nothing of how it might
feel to me
You do whatever
you please.”
